What is MRO Inventory?

MRO inventory refers to supplies, spare parts and other materials needed for routine maintenance, repair and operations (or MRO). This inventory is critical for the smooth running of a business. However, unlike raw materials, this inventory does not become a part of finished goods offered to customers. Office supplies, cleaning supplies, repair tools, personal protective equipment and safety equipment are some examples of MRO inventory.

Due to its small share in the overall cost, enterprises — small businesses, in particular — tend to overlook MRO inventory costs only to see an unexpected increase in their overhead later.
